DSA statistics have shown that on average, pupils that successfully pass the practical test have had around 22hrs private driving practice to compliment their lessons with an approved driving instructor. To supervise a learner you must:
Ensure you and the learner are correctly insured
Be over 21 and held a full licence for the appropriate type of vehicle for at least 3 years
Display 'L' plates on the front and back of the car
Some advice:
Do not try to be a driving instructor!
Your role is to help your driver gain experience, to compliment their lessons
Read Driving: The Essential Skills and the Highway Code, things have probably changed since you passed
Stay calm
Expect your driver to make mistakes
Be ready for the unexpected
Don't assume
Don't get angry
Take responsibility for your driver's mistakes
Remember, your driver will not have the experience necessary to anticipate the road ahead
Don't try to change driving techniques they have learnt from their instructor
Practise should be an enjoyable experience for both learner and supervisor
Remember - You may not be the right person to offer supervision
